I believe the issue is with the pictured metal stud that would seem to hold a cable. Pay close attention - if the ears "bottom out" on the metal of the box, you do not need that ground wire. If they bottom-out against drywall, you need a ground. Unrelated, one more tip on the device-mounting screws.

The bottom connector you push from underneath to release and pull towards the rear of the car. Be careful to note the position so you put it back correctly.
